Historic Caffè Gilli in Florence to Close Temporarily for Renovation

One of Florence’s oldest cafés, Caffè Gilli, will close temporarily from Monday, January 19, to allow for a major renovation. The historic venue, founded in 1733 and located in Piazza della Repubblica, is expected to reopen by the end of March.

According to a statement from the company, the works are aimed at updating the café to better meet current standards of functionality, hygiene and comfort, while preserving its historic identity. A key part of the project involves a complete overhaul of the public restrooms.

For the first time in the café’s history, the main dining room and the bar area will also be unified in terms of interior design. The goal is to create a more coherent and recognisable space, improving both aesthetics and functionality without altering the character that has made Gilli a long-standing reference point in the city.

The renovation is being overseen by architect Alessandro Consigli, responsible for the technical and structural aspects, with interior design consultancy by Paolo Becagli. The project has been developed in agreement with the Soprintendenza Archeologia Belle Arti e Paesaggio, Italy’s state body responsible for protecting cultural heritage. The authority approved the plan and followed the process to ensure the full safeguarding of the café’s historic furnishings, which will undergo careful restoration.

Marco Valenza, owner of Caffè Gilli and the Gilli group, said the intervention reflects a sense of responsibility towards Florence and its heritage. He added that while the café space will be closed, the company’s pastry production will continue during the renovation period, maintaining Gilli’s presence in the daily life of the city.
