The Tuscan airport system closed 2025 with its strongest results ever, as almost 9.8 million passengers travelled through the region’s two main airports, Florence and Pisa. The figures represent an overall increase of 8.4 per cent compared with 2024 and confirm a record-breaking year for Toscana Aeroporti, the company that manages both facilities.
Florence Airport: best year on record
Florence’s Amerigo Vespucci Airport handled 3.8 million passengers in 2025, marking its best performance to date. Traffic was up 9.4 per cent year on year, driven largely by international travel, which grew by 12.2 per cent and accounted for more than 87 per cent of total passengers.
The strong international performance offset a decline in domestic traffic, which fell by 6.4 per cent compared with 2024. The most popular routes from Florence were Paris, London, Amsterdam, Barcelona and Munich. The busiest day of the year was 7 September, when more than 15,100 passengers passed through the airport.
Pisa Airport also sets new records
2025 was also a record year for Pisa’s Galileo Galilei Airport, which served close to 6 million passengers. Traffic increased by 7.8 per cent compared with the previous year, with growth recorded in every single month.
International traffic was again the main driver, rising by 6.3 per cent and representing nearly three quarters of total passengers. Domestic traffic also performed strongly, with an increase of 12.8 per cent. The peak day was 28 June, when more than 26,700 passengers transited through the airport.
Cargo traffic at Pisa remained broadly stable, with over 12,400 tonnes of goods and mail handled during the year, a slight decrease of 4.1 per cent compared with 2024.
Summer peaks and a strong December
Across the two airports combined, Toscana Aeroporti exceeded one million passengers per month during the summer peak in June, July and August. December also set a new record, with around 610,000 passengers, up 7.8 per cent year on year and the best December ever recorded. According to the company, this confirms Tuscany’s appeal as a destination even outside the traditional high season.
Looking ahead to 2026
Looking forward, the focus now shifts to infrastructure and long-term development. Toscana Aeroporti’s president Marco Carrai said that the 2025 results confirm the strategic role and vitality of the Tuscan airport system.
He indicated that 2026 will be a crucial year for transforming passenger growth into lasting structural value, pointing to planned investments such as the expansion of Pisa’s terminal and the implementation of the Florence airport masterplan. According to the company, completing these projects is increasingly urgent in order to respond to growing demand while ensuring efficiency, sustainability and positive impacts for the wider territory.
