U.S. Embassy warns of possible holiday security risks in Italy

The U.S. Embassy in Rome has issued a security alert warning on December 15, 2025, of a potential increase in crime and possible acts of violent extremism across Italy during the holiday season.

According to the notice, such incidents have historically targeted crowded public areas, including holiday markets, shopping centres, restaurants, clubs, transport hubs, airports, places of worship and other sites popular with tourists. Public celebrations, demonstrations and seasonal events could also be considered potential targets.

The embassy advised U.S. citizens and residents in Italy to remain alert in busy or festive areas, to review their personal security plans and to monitor local news and official updates.

Italian authorities typically strengthen security measures in December and early January, especially in major cities such as Rome, Milan, Florence and Naples, where holiday events attract large crowds.
