For generations, members of her family have displayed a minor genetic trait: two toes partially joined by skin or connective tissue, a condition known medically as syndactyly. It is not the big toe that is affected, but rather the next two toes, typically connected about halfway upward.

The reader explains that the trait, which appeared in her parents, grandmother, and several relatives, is harmless and purely cosmetic.
