On Sunday, September 7, the popular Domenica al Museo initiative returns, giving residents and visitors the chance to explore Italy’s state museums and archaeological parks free of charge. The program, promoted by the Ministry of Culture, takes place every first Sunday of the month and includes many of Florence’s most celebrated museums, as well as sites across Tuscany.
Among the highlights in Florence, the Uffizi Galleries, Palazzo Pitti, Boboli Gardens, and the Galleria dell’Accademia—home to Michelangelo’s David—are expected to join the initiative once again. Pisa, Siena, Arezzo, Lucca, and Grosseto will also open their state-run museums and archaeological areas without tickets, offering a wide variety of cultural experiences across the region.
The Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence has already confirmed its participation. The museum announced it will welcome visitors with free admission throughout the day on September 7. Access will be available without reservations, in line with the general rules of the initiative.
The Ministry of Culture will publish the full list of participating museums along with opening times on its official website. In general, advance reservations are not accepted for Domenica al Museo, and access is on a first-come, first-served basis.
The initiative regularly attracts thousands of people, both locals eager to rediscover their cultural heritage and international travelers who happen to be in Tuscany on the right weekend. With the arrival of September, it represents a unique opportunity to enjoy masterpieces of art and history without cost, at a time when the summer crowds begin to thin.
