Three Children from Gaza Arrive at Meyer Hospital for Treatment

The Meyer Children’s Hospital in Florence has welcomed three young patients from Gaza as part of an Italian government humanitarian assistance program.

The children – a 12-year-old girl, a 17-year-old girl, and a 4-year-old boy – arrived in the city overnight on August 14 accompanied by family members and siblings. The 12-year-old suffered multiple fractures and a compression injury after being caught in a bombing, and travelled alongside her brother. The 17-year-old, who came with her parents and two sisters, requires treatment for kidney failure. The youngest patient, aged four, is affected by a serious autoimmune blood disorder.

Their transfer to Italy was made possible through a medical evacuation (Medevac) mission coordinated by the national Civil Protection Department and managed by the Central Remote Health Rescue Unit (Cross) in Pistoia.

In recent days, three C-130 aircraft from the Italian Air Force’s 46th Air Brigade flew from Pisa Airport to the city of Eilat in Israel to collect pediatric patients and their caregivers.

The medical team included a doctor and a nurse from Meyer Hospital, together with social workers and a language mediator provided by the Meyer Foundation to assist communication between the families and healthcare staff. The foundation also supported the reception and accommodation of the patients and their relatives.
