One of Florence’s most beloved summer traditions returns on Saturday August 10 as the city honors San Lorenzo, its co-patron saint, with a full day of civic and popular celebrations.
Festivities will begin in the morning at 9:45 a.m. with the traditional parade of the Florentine Republic, which will depart from the Palagio di Parte Guelfa and proceed toward Palazzo Vecchio. From there, around 10:15 a.m., the procession will continue to Piazza Signoria and then on to the Basilica of San Lorenzo, where a solemn Mass at 11:00 a.m. will be celebrated. During the service, the city administration will offer candles as a symbolic gesture, followed by a blessing to the city.
In the evening, the square in front of the basilica will transform, as it does each year, into a festive gathering space for locals and visitors. The highlight of the evening begins at 9:00 p.m. with the free distribution of pasta with ragù, followed by the cutting and sharing of two tons of fresh watermelon—a beloved tradition that brings together hundreds of people from all walks of life.

Local DJ Remo will bring music to the night with a live set, turning the square into an open-air party. Another special moment of the evening will be the presentation of the “Leone d’Oro”, a handcrafted award created by artisan Paolo Penko, symbolizing civic merit and Florentine tradition.
The evening event is organized by the Centro Commerciale Naturale San Lorenzo, in collaboration with the Mercato Centrale and supported by Confesercenti and Confcommercio.
Traditionally, the night of San Lorenzo is also associated with the Perseids meteor shower, making it one of the most magical nights of the year. According to popular belief, shooting stars seen on this night carry a special significance and are said to grant wishes.
Earlier in the day, Piazza Santa Croce will host a special market from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., promoted by UAI Firenze and the Italian Street Vendors Federation (FIA). The event will offer a wide range of goods—from artisan crafts to food and clothing—turning one of Florence’s most iconic squares into a vibrant hub for shopping and street culture.
