Doctors at Careggi University Hospital have successfully removed a 35-kilogram ovarian tumor from a patient, in what has been described as a rare and complex case. The mass measured over 40 centimeters in diameter and occupied the entire abdominal cavity.
The case was handled by a multidisciplinary team at the Florence hospital. The initial diagnosis was made through emergency radiology imaging by Dr. Marco Vangelisti, who identified the extensive mass. The patient was then treated by the gynecologic oncology unit led by Dr. Maria Cristina Petrella, with surgery performed by a team under Dr. Massimiliano Fambrini, head of oncologic gynecologic surgery. The histological examination was carried out by Dr. Francesca Castiglione from the pathology and molecular diagnostics unit.
Remarkably, the patient was discharged just five days after surgery and has begun a follow-up care program with the medical gynecologic oncology team.
The case highlights the high level of coordination and expertise within Careggi’s healthcare teams. According to hospital officials, the successful outcome is a testament to the benefits of an integrated, multi-specialty approach to complex clinical situations.
