The Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence, home to Michelangelo’s David, has welcomed an unusual new guest: Stitch, the beloved Disney character from Lilo & Stitch.
In partnership with Disney Italy and with the approval of the Italian Ministry of Culture, the museum is currently exhibiting an artwork humorously titled “Stitch’s Self-Portrait”. The piece is part of a special initiative celebrating the upcoming release of the new Lilo & Stitch movie, and it will be on display until June 20, 2025.
The project started with the production of a short promotional video featuring Stitch landing in Florence aboard his spaceship. In the video, he enters the museum, causing confusion among visitors before stopping in awe in front of Michelangelo’s David. Inspired by the Renaissance masterpiece, Stitch takes on the role of artist and creates his own sculpture—his “self-portrait”.
But this is not just a video gag. The artwork has been physically created and is now temporarily exhibited at the Galleria dell’Accademia, offering visitors of all ages a playful yet meaningful way to engage with Italy’s cultural heritage.
The initiative is part of Disney’s broader effort to promote cultural education through entertainment, using contemporary language and familiar characters to inspire curiosity and make museums more accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
Visitors can experience this unique crossover between pop culture and Renaissance art until June 20. The exhibition offers not only a fun photo opportunity but also an invitation to reflect on how creativity, across centuries and cultures, continues to inspire new generations.
