Fiorentina’s journey in the UEFA Conference League came to a dramatic and bitter end on Thursday night at the Stadio Artemio Franchi. Despite a thrilling and spirited performance, the Viola were eliminated by Spain’s Real Betis, who advanced to the final in Wrocław, Poland, scheduled for May 28.
Fiorentina started the night needing to overturn the 2-1 defeat suffered in the first leg in Seville. For long stretches, it seemed they might do it, especially after a remarkable first-half performance from Robin Gosens, who scored twice to put Fiorentina ahead on the night and ahead on aggregate.
However, Betis had other plans. After a balanced first half filled with chances for both sides, the Spanish team grew stronger in the second half, forcing Fiorentina to defend deeper and deeper. Veteran goalkeeper David De Gea kept the hosts alive with several key saves, but the pressure eventually became too much.
In the 98th minute—just eight minutes into extra time—Moroccan forward Abde Ezzalzouli, who had already scored in the first leg, struck again. His goal made it 2-2 on the night, tipping the balance back in Betis’ favor and leaving Fiorentina with no choice but to chase the game.
Despite a desperate final push from the home side, including late attempts from Moise Kean and Gosens, Fiorentina couldn’t find the goal they needed. The exhausted squad ran out of energy and ideas, while Betis came close to adding another in the dying moments.
The night had begun with great hope as Fiorentina played with intensity and courage. Gosens’ first goal came in response to a stunning free-kick by Antony for Betis, which had given the visitors an early lead. Gosens then headed in again just before halftime, sending the Franchi crowd into a frenzy.
But in the second half, Betis showed more stamina and control. Fiorentina struggled to keep possession in midfield, with both Adli and Fagioli showing signs of fatigue and pressure. Even the substitutions made little impact as Betis dominated extra time.
Fiorentina’s European dream ends here, just one step short of the final. It is a bitter result for the fans and the players, who gave everything but fell just short. Real Betis now moves on to fight for the Conference League title in Poland, while Fiorentina must turn its attention back to domestic competition.
