Orange Weather Alert Issued for Tuscany Due to Heavy Rain and Storm Risk

The Tuscan Civil Protection system has issued an orange weather alert for hydrogeological risk and strong thunderstorms, in effect from 8:00 AM to midnight on Monday, May 5. Residents and visitors are urged to exercise maximum caution during this period, especially in areas prone to flooding or landslides.

An earlier yellow alert is already active from 9:00 PM on Sunday, May 4, particularly for northwestern Tuscany. The alert level will rise as weather conditions worsen overnight.

Meteorologists forecast a significant increase in atmospheric instability across the region starting this evening. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected, especially in central and northern inland areas. The storms may become stationary in certain zones, increasing the risk of local flooding.

The provinces most at risk include Florence, Siena, and Arezzo, where locally intense thunderstorms may bring up to 100–150 mm of rainfall, with even higher amounts possible in mountainous areas. Other central-northern areas may receive up to 40–60 mm. Some storms may produce rainfall intensities of 30–50 mm per hour.

The Tuscan Civil Protection system is on alert and ready to respond in case of emergencies. Residents are advised to stay informed, avoid unnecessary travel during the alert periods, and follow all safety instructions issued by local authorities.
