An American student was the victim of an aggravated robbery in the early hours of May 2 in Via Nazionale, a central street in Florence. The 22-year-old, in the city for a short-term academic program, was out with friends when he was reportedly approached by four young men. One of them allegedly grabbed and stole several necklaces from around his neck.
Thanks to a quick call to the emergency number 112 by one of the student’s friends, police were able to intervene shortly after the incident. Two of the alleged attackers—a 23-year-old and a 24-year-old, both of Moroccan origin—were arrested. The other two suspects managed to flee the scene and are still at large, reportedly taking the stolen jewelry with them.
According to authorities, the two arrested individuals were already known to police for previous offenses related to theft and drug possession. They are currently being held in police custody while awaiting a fast-track trial.
Incidents like this are relatively rare in central Florence, but local authorities encourage visitors and residents alike to remain vigilant, especially at night in busy or tourist-frequented areas.
