The island of Montecristo

Explore Montecristo: A Rare Tuscan Treasure Opens for Visits in 2025

From late March 2025, the stunning and fragile Island of Montecristo, part of the Tuscan Archipelago, opens to visitors once again. Known for its rich biodiversity and strict conservation policies, Montecristo is a rare treasure. Access is by reservation only, with limited slots that are highly sought after. If you’re planning to visit this unique destination, here’s what you need to know.

Booking Details: Secure Your Spot

The National Park Authority has announced that reservations for Montecristo visits will open online at 9:00 AM on January 27, 2025, via their official website. A total of 1,725 spots are available, distributed across 23 dates. These slots tend to sell out within a week, so early booking is essential.

Each reservation is nominative and requires immediate payment by credit card. The cost is €140 per person, which includes maritime transport and guided tours. Only individuals aged 12 and above are allowed, and pets are not permitted.

2025 Schedule and Special Offers

Visits are available from March 22 to September 21, 2025. Departures typically take place from Piombino Marittima, with a stop at Porto Azzurro (Elba Island). On May 16 and June 13, departures will instead leave from Porto Santo Stefano, with a stop at Giglio Island.

Montecristo offers reduced rates for residents of the Tuscan Archipelago’s municipalities, who can book from a reserved pool of 100 spots for €60 per person. These reduced-rate bookings must be made by March 3, 2025, after which any remaining spots will be available at full price.

A New Adventure: Special Hiking Excursions

New for 2025 are two exclusive hiking excursions on April 5 and September 7. These tours will lead visitors to Monte della Fortezza, Montecristo’s peak, standing 645 meters above sea level and offering breathtaking views. Participation is limited to 12 experienced hikers per date. The hike, equipped with cables and steps, costs €180 per person.

For these dates, island stays will be extended by an hour, with the remaining 63 slots (of the usual 75) available for the standard itinerary at €150 per person.

Why Montecristo? A Rare Biodiversity Haven

Montecristo is a State Nature Reserve and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, recognized for its exceptional biodiversity and environmental importance. It’s part of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park and the Pelagos Sanctuary for Marine Mammals.

Due to its fragility, strict regulations are in place to protect the ecosystem. Swimming is prohibited, and visitors cannot remove plants, animals, or geological material. The island is off-limits to children under 12, and no medical facilities are available.

The island is open to visitors only during specific periods: March 1–April 15 and May 15–October 31, excluding April 16–May 14 to protect migratory birds.

How to Plan Your Visit

Given its exclusivity, visiting Montecristo is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. To make the most of it:
• Book Early: Slots fill quickly, often within a week.
• Prepare Physically: Some itineraries, especially the new peak hike, require stamina and experience.
• Follow Guidelines: Respect conservation rules to help preserve this natural wonder for future generations.
