New Year’s Eve in Florence: Firework Ban, No Glass and Non-Stop Public Transport

Florence is gearing up for a festive and safe New Year’s Eve with several regulations and services in place, as outlined in a recent ordinance signed by Mayor Sara Funaro in collaboration with the prefecture.

A Night of Diverse Performances

Florence’s New Year’s Eve program promises an unforgettable night with performances by renowned artists like Mr. Rain, Giovanni Caccamo, and BowLand. From jazz in Piazza Santissima Annunziata to gospel in Piazza San Giovanni, and a mix of opera, ventriloquism, and video mapping in Piazza della Signoria, there’s something for everyone. The Oltrarno district will feature lively marching bands, while Piazza Santa Croce offers symphonic music and dance under the stars. Organized by the Municipality of Florence with support from Fondazione MUS.E and Toscana Energia, the event caters to all ages and highlights lesser-known city areas like Via Palazzuolo and Via Finiguerra, enhancing the community spirit while welcoming 2025.

Ban on Fireworks and Glass Containers

To ensure safety and respect for the city, a strict ban on fireworks and glass containers will be enforced in Florence’s city center. From 5:00 PM on December 31 until 7:00 AM on January 1, 2025, the use and possession of firecrackers, fireworks, and other pyrotechnics—regardless of their classification—are prohibited in public or publicly accessible areas. Violators risk fines of up to €500 and the confiscation of prohibited items.

Additionally, from 7:00 PM on December 31 to 7:00 AM on January 1, the sale of beverages in glass containers for takeaway purposes will be strictly forbidden in the UNESCO area of the city. This includes public spaces and areas open to the public. Drinks may only be served in glass for on-site consumption at bars or restaurants. Individuals are also prohibited from carrying glass containers or pepper spray for immediate use in public areas.

A Celebration of Music and Safety

“This New Year’s Eve will be a celebration of music and fun in our squares,” said Mayor Funaro. “To ensure everyone’s safety, including our pets, we’ve introduced these measures. It’s important for everyone to enjoy the evening while respecting the city, its residents, and its animals.”

The city will host various events across iconic locations, including Piazza della Signoria, Piazza San Giovanni, Piazza Santissima Annunziata, Piazza Santa Croce, and the Oltrarno district.

Enhanced Public Transport and Safety Measures

To accommodate revelers, public transportation will be running with extended schedules:

Tramway: Non-stop service throughout the night.

Bus Services: Five key lines (6, 11, 14, 17, and 23) will operate with additional late-night routes until 2:30 AM on January 1.

The city’s ZTL (Limited Traffic Zone) will be activated at 8:00 PM on December 31 to reduce congestion. Meanwhile, 110 municipal police officers will be deployed to manage traffic, respond to emergencies, monitor events, and ensure public order across the city’s main squares.

Florence invites residents and visitors alike to celebrate responsibly and enjoy the city’s vibrant events while adhering to these measures for a safe and enjoyable start to 2025.
