The city of Prato, in collaboration with the Tuscany Region, local universities, and the National Institute of Astrophysics (INAF), has submitted its candidacy to host a cutting-edge research center dedicated to studying extraterrestrial materials. This facility would primarily analyze Martian samples brought back to Earth. The proposal has been identified as highly promising by the Italian Space Agency (ASI).
Under the plan, Prato will construct the “Curation Facility” in partnership with ASI, with a municipal budget allocation of €6 million, €2 million of which will be co-funded by the Tuscany Region. The initiative positions Tuscany as a hub for international scientific research and innovation.
Prato’s candidacy benefits from the extensive scientific contributions of the Parsec Foundation, which has played a key role in advocating for the project. The facility is seen as a transformative opportunity for the city, enhancing its global reputation while repurposing and revitalizing the designated area for the center’s construction.
If successful, the establishment of this research center will mark a significant milestone for Prato, creating new opportunities in science and boosting the city’s prominence on the international stage. The initiative underscores the region’s commitment to advancing space research and fostering collaboration with national and international institutions.
