FLORENCE, ITALY – The 1966 flood of the Arno river in Florence killed 101 people and damaged or destroyed millions of masterpieces of art and rare books. It is considered the worst flood in the city’s history since 1557.
To mark the 50th anniversary of the November 4th, the City of Florence with the other institutions are promoting a programme of events to welcome those volunteers who helped Florence in times of need and emergency, the mud angels (Angeli del fango in Italian).
On November 4, at 9 AM, at the Salone dei Cinquecento in Palazzo Vecchio, an extraordinary City Council will honour the volunteers who return to Florence 50 years later.
At 11,30 AM, there will be a Mass at Santa Croce, at 3 PM, the relocation ceremony of the restoration of Vasari’s Ultima cena to Santa Croce will be held with attendance by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella.
At 6:30 PM the new SkyArte documentary After the flood will be shown in the Salone dei Cinquecento.
The day will close with a torchlight procession from the Basilica of San Miniato al Monte to Piazza Santa Croce in memory of the same organised on November 4, 1967.
