FLORENCE, ITALY – The Italian government aims to have 100% ultra broadband coverage in Italy by 2020.
The utility giant ENEL reveals further details of its EUR 2.5 billion plan to help bring ultrafast broadband to around 7.5 million homes in large 224 Italian cities via its newly-created Enel Open Fiber venture.
Enel CEO Francesco Starace said yesterday (April 7, 2016) in Rome work would begin in the cities of Perugia, Catania, Cagliari, Bari and Venice, to be followed in the autumn 2016 by Florence, Genoa, Naples, Palermo and Padua.
The Board of Directors of ENEL, chaired by Patrizia Grieco, examined on March 23, 2016 the strategic plan of Enel OpEn Fiber S.p.A. EOF, the company established by ENEL in December last year to build and operate ultra-broadband optical fibre infrastructure across Italy.
ENEL OpEn Fiber will operate as a wholesale-only player and will build infrastructure for other licensed operators.
