The copy of the Marzocco is under restoration

FLORENCE, ITALY – The copy of the Marzocco statue in Florence is under restoration by a few days. The statue is placed on the battlements of the Palazzo Vecchio. The yard was equipped with transparent materials for security reasons.

This tecnique will make possible to observe the work of restorers. The work will last throughout the month of April 2016 and will cost 10,500 euro, funded by Associazione degli Amici dei Bandierai degli Uffizi, ENEL and La Marzocco.

The restoration is part of the Florence I Care project, which entails looking for sponsorship for restoration and maintenance.

The Marzocco  under restoration is a copy of the original statue by Donatello (sculpted between 1419 and 1420) transferred to the Museum of the Bargello in 1865. The statue depicts a heraldic lion resting a paw on a shield with the lily, the emblem of Florence.

The sculpture and the base appear deteriorated because of the weather, moss and various kinds of vegetation.
