Vaccination campaign for meningitis in Tuscany

FLORENCE, ITALY – An intensive vaccination campaign will be launched in the areas of Tuscany that have registered a significant rise in meningitis cases in recent months. All the population in Florence, Prato and Pistoia areas can be obtain the vaccine for free.

A 50-year-old woman from San Donnino (Campi Bisenzio) near Florence is the last Tuscan resident to contract meningitis C, bringing the total cases of meningitis in the region to 12 thus far this year.

The woman is being treated in the infectious diseases unit of Florence’s Careggi Hospital and didn’t have direct contact with the public in her administrative job. In 2015, there were 38 cases of meningitis in the region.
