FLORENCE, ITALY – The city of Florence reminds the Renaissance sculptor Michelangelo by installing a copy of his famous David, recreated in a contemporary style with colorful tattoos and a Carrara marble block.
The sculpture was placed in the market of San Lorenzo. It pays tribute to the renowned artist while the metropolis located in northern Italy, former summit of the Renaissance, commemorates his funeral, which occurred on July 14, 1564.
As part of the efforts to pay homage to Michelangelo, the Florentine authorities placed a block of Carrara marble in the Piazza della Signoria to remember the piece from which the artist carved his famous David.
The statue of more than five meters high was set long ago in the village and was later transferred to the Museum Gallery of the Academy of the Tuscan capital.
Considered one of the foremost artists of the Renaissance, Michelangelo was also an architect and painter, and his best known works also include Mercy, located in the Vatican, and the Ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
