FLORENCE, ITALY – In a highly unusual twist, five Italian teams will be advancing to the second round of the Europa League. Fiorentina, Napoli, Roma, Inter and Torino are all advancing with Fiorentina meeting Roma for an Italian derby with the first match to be played in Florence.
It is believed to be a first time that five Italian clubs had advanced so far. According to reports, the last time just four Italian teams advanced to the second round was in the 1999-2000 season.
Premier Matteo Renzi commented Friday February 27 on the fact that Roma and Fiorentina were drawn against each other in the last 16 of the Europa League. “Of all the possibilities…it had to be Roma! #EuropaLeague,” tweeted the premier, a strong Fiorentina supporter.
