The magistrate of Florence, Antonio Pezzuti has confirmed the arrest of Elso Banchini, 73, stopped by police in the night between Friday and Saturday on charges of being the man who shot himself last November 4 to the Secretary of the Archbishop Giuseppe Betori, Don Paolo Brogi.
The archbishop of Florence, Giuseppe Betori, has already pardoned the man who shot him, but now believes that justice must take its course. “From the first moment we follow with respect and gratitude the work done with care and professionalism by the investigators,” said Betori. “The ascertainment of the truth regards the path of the society and should always be undertaken, forgiveness belongs to the sphere of consciousness and has already been offered. Today does not need confirmation.” In the ambush against Betori in piazza Duomo was wounded in the abdomen the secretary to the archbishop, Don Paolo Brogi.
