Tuscany’s new regional government has taken shape after weeks of intense negotiations among the center-left allies of President Eugenio Giani, a process that involved not only regional leaders but also the national headquarters of their parties. The outcome is a broad alliance administration that mixes continuity and renewal, with three returning members and several newcomers.
The biggest surprise is the appointment of Mia Bintou Diop, a 23-year-old city councillor from Livorno, as vice president of the Region. Born in Italy to a Senegalese father and an Italian-German mother, Diop is a political science student at the University of Pisa and has been active in the Democratic Party since her teenage years. She becomes the youngest vice president in Tuscany’s history, a choice widely seen as a signal of generational change and cultural inclusion.
Presenting his new team, Giani said the goal is to combine experience with the energy of a new generation and to give voice to all areas of the region.
The center-right opposition, however, reacted harshly, arguing that the new cabinet reflects political compromise and image-driven choices rather than competence and administrative experience.
Giani is expected to assign portfolios in the coming days, with health, education, and welfare among the key areas awaiting final definition.
