From March 8 to July 27, 2025, Pistoia Musei will host an extraordinary exhibition dedicated to Daniel Buren, one of the most influential figures in contemporary international art. Titled DANIEL BUREN. Make, Unmake, Remake. Works in situ and situated works 1968-2025, the exhibition will take place at Palazzo Buontalenti and extend to other venues of Pistoia Musei and locations throughout the city and surrounding areas.
Curated by Daniel Buren and Monica Preti, director of Fondazione Pistoia Musei, the exhibition is organized by Fondazione Pistoia Musei with the support of Fondazione Caript and in collaboration with Galleria Continua. It offers visitors the opportunity to explore Buren’s unique artistic journey, featuring a selection of works from different periods, including early paintings from 1965-1967, his iconic Cabanes, light works, high-reliefs, and newly created or reimagined pieces specifically for Pistoia Musei.
Buren is known for his distinctive use of alternating white and colored vertical stripes, always 8.7 cm wide, which he initially employed in paintings and later integrated into public and institutional spaces. His approach, which he terms in situ, emphasizes the relationship between artwork and its environment, making each creation inseparable from its physical and cultural setting.
Palazzo Buontalenti will serve as the focal point of the exhibition, while other spaces such as Museo dell’Antico Palazzo dei Vescovi, Museo di San Salvatore, and Collezioni del Novecento at Palazzo de’ Rossi will host additional works. Furthermore, pieces from Buren’s extensive career in Italy will be on display, including Three-coloured fountain walls for a hexagon (2005–2011) at Villa La Magia in Quarrata and La Cabane Éclatée aux Quatre Salles (2005) at the Gori Collection in Santomato di Pistoia.
A rich program of related events and a dedicated exhibition catalogue, published by Gli Ori, will accompany the show.
