The Artemio Franchi Stadium will remain home to ACF Fiorentina throughout its ambitious renovation project. Thanks to a decision ratified by Mayor Sara Funaro and approved by the Palazzo Vecchio council, the club will not have to relocate to another city for its home games. However, playing in an active construction zone will inevitably come with challenges for both fans and locals.
ACF Fiorentina: A Legacy in Purple
Founded in 1926, ACF Fiorentina is one of Italy’s most historic football clubs. With a rich history that includes two Serie A titles, six Coppa Italia trophies, and a UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, Fiorentina embodies the passion of Florence. The team plays under the iconic symbol of the lily, and the Franchi Stadium has been its stage since 1931. Designed by the renowned architect Pier Luigi Nervi, the stadium is both a sporting and architectural landmark now undergoing a modern transformation.
Renovation Works: Blending Innovation with Heritage
The ongoing renovations aim to modernize the stadium while preserving its historical elements, such as the Maratona Tower, the helical staircases, and the cantilever roof. Key upgrades include new foundations, the refurbishment of the Fiesole and Ferrovia stands, updated seating, and the modernization of public facilities. A cutting-edge roof structure will be introduced, enhancing the stadium’s functionality and aesthetic.
Currently, construction is concentrated on the Fiesole Curve and portions of the Maratona and Tribune areas. The dismantling of structures added during the 1990 FIFA World Cup has progressed, and over 50 deep foundation piles have already been installed. Restoration work on the iconic Maratona Tower is set to begin soon.
Challenges of Sharing Space with a Construction Site
While keeping Fiorentina at the Franchi during the works preserves the team’s connection to its home, it brings inevitable complications. Reduced stadium capacity and restricted access to certain sections will affect the fan experience. Safety measures, including the segmentation of construction zones, have been implemented to ensure simultaneous use of the stadium for matches and ongoing renovations.
The surrounding area will also feel the impact, with increased traffic, noise, and temporary changes to local infrastructure. However, maintaining the team’s presence at the Franchi—especially during its centenary season—has been deemed essential.
