The Renaissance by Della Robbia enchants Boston

FLORENCE, ITALY – A new exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, features the Luca della Robbia’s Madonna and Child, which was recently restored by Friends of Florence.

Della Robbia: Sculpting With Color in Renaissance Florence is the first US exhibition devoted to the sculptor. The exhibit will remain at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston through December 4th. Then it travels to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC for display from February 5th, 2017 through June 4th, 2017.

In the 15th century, Luca della Robbia (1399/1400–1482) noted for his glazed terracotta roundels, in a technique he apparently developed himself. Though a leading sculptor in stone, after developing his technique in the early 1440s, he mainly produced terracotta thereafter, and passed the technique on to his nephew Andrea della Robbia and great-nephew Giovanni della Robbia.

The Della Robbia family workshop flourished in Florence for about a century, producing expressive artworks for all spheres of life. Production of sculpture using this technique lasted only about a century before its secrets were lost. Some of the most familiar images today of Renaissance Italy, Della Robbia sculptures have retained their original color and shine over the centuries.
