An unusual Florentine tradition? The Rificolona

FLORENCE, ITALY – Rificolona  is a very ancient Florentine tradition in the evening of September 7th. Throughout the town everybody can see parades of adults and children holding their Rificolone, a special paper lanterns hanged from a stick. The main event will take place in piazza Santissima Annunziata.

It’s possible to buy Rificolonas in the Florentine shops, but the tradition wants that children made it. The beginnig of the event is  at 8.30 pm: parades, music and entartainment will take place  untill late in the evening, in front of the Church where a venerated image of the Virgin Mary is kept.

The Cathedral is open from 20,30 to 23,30; at 9.30 pm an organ concert takes place in the Cathedral. A famous market used to take place here on the 8th of September, for this important religious feast.

The fair that took place in the same piazza on 8 September also provided an opportunity to sell their produce. The peasants lit their path with torches and lanterns of various shapes, which they continued to use once they arrived in the city.
