FLORENCE, ITALY – A chasm of about two hundred meters by seven wide opened on Lungarno Torrigiani, between Ponte Vecchio and Ponte alle Grazie, in the heart of Florence. The collapse occurred around 6.30 and involved about twenty cars that were parked.
The Fire Department intervened on site: are not currently involved. Two buildings have been following the abyss caused by the rupture of the water main. The measure is just a precaution to make the most of the controls: from the findings of the fire brigade and civil engineering are currently not seepage in basements of the two buildings.
The failure was caused by the explosion of the main ridge of the aqueduct that supplies Florence. The taps are dry throughout the city. The mayor Dario Nardella was unable to indicate when the situation will return to normal. Water tankers are supplying schools and some areas of the city.
Damage to the Lungarno seems very serious and technicians are still estimating their severity. People say they had started to see water coming from the embankment around midnight, six hours before the collapse.
At 11 am new portion of the Lungarno Torrigiani road collapsed into the chasm that opened this morning, the new collapse of concerns about ten meters of the road surface precipitated into the abyss.
Afterwards technicians with the municipal police began to remove the drive from the abyss to deliver them to their owners. At around 3 pm the water began to come back throughout the city.
The company that operates the aqueduct Publiacqua has confirmed that in the last 24 hours there were two pipe ruptures: the first during the night and the second at dawn. The Italian judiciary has opened an investigation to establish responsibilities
