FLORENCE, ITALY – Italy is on maximum alert after at least two terror attacks in Brussels on March 22, 2016. The maximum security level tripped also in Tuscany, especially in bus and trains stations.
Belgian authorities confirmed 13 people died while another 30 were reported wounded in a blast at the capital’s national airport, also confirming it was caused by a terror attack. Italian government said the attack have not involved any Italian nationals.
UK medias reported at least 10 people were killed in a separate explosion at at the Maalbeek Metro Station in central Brussels near European Union headquarters. All transportation in Brussels has been shut down as the army took to the streets.
The Italian governments announced further measures to combat and prevent the terrorist threat. “It is a new attack on the heart of Europe: an attack comparable to what happened in Paris”, mayor of Florence, Dario Nardella, said this morning.
President Sergio Mattarella said liberty itself is at stake in the wake of the deadly terror attacks that shook Brussels: “We must face this decisive challenge with a common strategy that considers all aspects of the situation – security, military, cultural, and cooperation and development,” he said in a statement. “Liberty and the future of human cohabitation are at stake”. Italy’s Lower House (Camera dei Deputati) observed a minute of silence for the victims.
