Dante and his Poem by Michelino

Dante Alighieri exhibit to show in Florence

FLORENCE, ITALY – An exhibition commemorating the 750th anniversary of the birth of Dante Alighieri will be on view in the poet’s native city of Florence from December 14 to 30, 2015.

The show titled Dante. Life, Work, and Fortune is made up of nine panels with quotes from famous authors about the Medieval poet credited with being the father of the Italian language as we know it, plus works of art by the likes of Botticelli, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and others.

The Divine Comedy is an epic poem by Dante Alighieri, begun in 1308 and completed 1320, a year before his death in 1321. It is widely considered the preeminent work of Italian literature and is seen as one of the greatest works of world literature.

The poem’s imaginative vision of the afterlife is representative of the medieval world-view as it had developed in the Western Church by the 14th century. It helped establish the Tuscan language, in which it is written, as the standardized Italian language. It is divided into three parts: Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso.
