FLORENCE, ITALY – Florence’s new opera house, the Teatro dell’Opera, will host the 78th edition of the music festival Maggio Musicale Fiorentino.
The Maggio Musicale is Europe’s second-oldest music and theater festival. Previous festivals were held in the city’s Teatro Comunale.
Festival Chief Conductor Zubin Mehta, set designer and director Pier’Alli and tenor Burkhard Fritz announced Ludwig van Beethoven’s Fidelio as the start of the upcoming festival program. Burkhard Fritz will play Florestan. Opening date: monday 27 April, 7,30 pm.
“Of all my creatures, Fidelio is the one whose birth cost me the most bitter pain, the one that gave me the most grief. For this is also the most expensive; above all my other works, I consider it worthy of being preserved and used for the science of art”: thus Ludwig van Beethoven himself presents his only opera, with a plot centered on the fight against tyranny and the quest for justice, premiered in a Vienna occupied by Napoleon’s troops.
