More females reading than males, survey shows

FLORENCE, ITALY – Readership of books slid in Italy in 2014, falling to 41.4% from 43% in 2013, national statistical agency Istat reported. Some 23.7 million people said they had read at least one book last year for personal reasons, rather than for work or professional commitments.

It also found that just over 14% said they were strong readers, consuming at least one book per month. Istat also found that women are consistently stronger readers than men, with a total of 48% of females above age six reading at least one book per year compared with 34.5% of men.

Almost 67% of regular readers said they had read with their parents when they were kids, against 33% or readers who said their parents also read. Regional divisions were found by Istat, which said fewer than one in three people in southern Italy read regularly. City residents read more than people in small towns, Istat found.
