FLORENCE, ITALY – The first foundation stone was laid for the American Pavilion which be presented at Expo Milano 2015 with the theme “American Food 2.0: United to Feed the Planet”. The Country will demonstrate its commitment to tackle the challenges in the field of nutrition.

Connected from Washington, the U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry, spoke of how innovation is in the DNA of Americans: “It’s the lifeblood of the United States and, as a global leader in the improvement of food security, we are proud to seize this opportunity by getting involved with great enthusiasm at Expo Milano 2015.”

Taking part in Milan were the U.S. Ambassador to Italy John Phillips; the Commissioner for Expo Milano 2015, Giuseppe Sala; the Mayor of Milan, Giuliano Pisapia, and the President of the Lombardy Region, Roberto Maroni, together with Partners of the U.S. Pavilion.

As Ambassador John Philips noted in his speech, the American Pavilion will be built thanks to sponsors and private investment. Friends of the USA Pavilion in Milano 2015, the private organization that manages the U.S. presence at Expo 2015, announced the entry of important partners, including GE, Brand USA, Uvet, DuPont, illy, 3M, McKinsey & Company and FleishmanHillard.

The Pavilion will also be an incubator of ideas and discussion, as explained by President Roberto Maroni: “From these foundations will rise up a site that will host meetings and projects for the future.” Giuliano Pisapia relied on the metaphor of navigation: “The Expo ship has set sail. Laying the foundation stone of the United States Pavilion is an important stage in the journey of Milan’s Universal Exposition towards its port of arrival.”

“It’s a pleasure to see the site of Expo today dressed in stars and stripes and the traditional ‘food truck’, which will be a key feature of the look of U.S. space hosting visitors at the Universal Exposition of 2015. The United States is officially ready to start work on the construction of its Pavilion, which, in terms of content and Visitor Experience, will certainly be one of the most attractive and visited,” said Giuseppe Sala.

Inside the Pavilion, designed by the architect James Biber, there will be a fully functional vertical farm. Here will be celebrated the history of agriculture in the United States and its innovation-led successes, with numerous programs and events, including interactive exhibits, tastings, exhibitions and workshops as accelerators of innovation, created with the contributions of private donors and partners.
