Rome topped Italian cities for the number of foreign visitors in the first six months of the year according to an index drawn up by Hotels.com and published Thursday July, 17, 2014.
Venice came in second place, followed by Milan, Florence and Sorrento. Rome was the city of choice particularly for Russian visitors. It was also popular with tourists from Argentina, France, Spain and the United States.
The foreign cities most popular with Italian visitors in the same period were New York, Paris and London.

Although Florence is less visited than other major Italian cities, famous in the capital are the two most visited museums of its kind in Italy these are the Uffizi and the Accademia Gallery, which houses the original copy of the famous David by Michelangelo.
