FLORENCE, ITALY – The Tower of San Niccolò has reopened to the public on June 24, the day of San Giovanni. Guided tours will be available until September 30th from the hours 17 to 20.
The tower became visitable for the first time in 2011, after a restoration. The tower of San Niccolò tells the story of the mighty circle of walls that were built at the end of the thirteenth century to represent “a fortress of strength and beauty of the city” (G.Villani, Nuova Cronica): the new city walls, designed by Arnolfo di Cambio, would have better defended the city and would have also included the new urban areas; the doorsincluding that of San Niccolò- would have allowed a regulated internal access and facilitated a ready sighting of enemies.
In the nineteenth century, the medieval walls were destroyed, with the exception of a small section in Oltrarno and the doors, indeed, today are real and true “architectural islands” that are in the settlement of the city. The service of guided tours, sponsored by Museums Service of the Municipality of Florence, and is organized by the Association MUS.E and is played in italian, english, french and spanish.
The Tower of San Niccolò opens from June 24 to September 30th, everyday from hrs 17 to 20. Access every 30 minutes max. 18 people.
