Tristan und Isolde returns to the Maggio with Zubin Mehta

FLORENCE, ITALY – Tristan und Isolde returns to the Maggio with Zubin Mehta on the podium for a new production designed by Stefano Poda in the Opening night of the 77° Festival MMF (Maggio Musicale Fiorentino) in Florence, Italy.

Maggio Musicale Fiorentino is an annual arts festival in Florence, including a notable opera festival; it was founded in April 1933 by conductor Vittorio Gui with the aim of presenting contemporary and forgotten operas in visually dramatic productions.

It was the first music festival in Italy. The first opera presented was Verdi’s early Nabucco, his early operas then being rarely staged. It now takes place between late April, May and into June, typically with four operas.

“O Night of love, grant oblivion that I may live; take me up into your bosom, free from the world!”: this is how the two lovers sing of their love in the duet of the second act, the core and heart of the opera Tristan ind Isolde, the most amazing creation of the genius of Wagner and a turning point in the history of music.

All the themes closest to Romance – Love, Death, the Night – are present here, but altered and transformed. Wagner’s score is sublime with an almost unbearable expressive tension and exhaustive melodic expansion, bringing it to the height of poetic pathos.

The Opera is scheduled in the Teatro Comunale (Corso Italia 16, Florence, Italy) Wednesday, April 30, h 19.00, Sunday, May 4, h 15.30, Wednesday, May 7, h 19.00, Sunday, May 11, h 15.30. The tickets prices are between 30 € and 140 €. The new Opera house opened in 2011 is not still fully usable  yet.
