The wreck of Costa Concordia at Isola del Giglio

Schettino returns to Costa Concordia wreck

FLORENCE, ITALY – Former captain Francesco Schettino has returned to the Costa Concordia wreck for the first time as part of his manslaughter trial.  The Italian ship crashed into rocks and capsized off the Tuscan island of Giglio in January 2012. In the disaster died 32 people.

The captain Schettino has been accused of leaving the luxury liner before the 4,229 people on board the ship were taken off the ship. He has accepted some responsibilities, but he had assured also that he had done everything possible to minimize the damage, after the collision with the rock.

Schettino is currently on trial at Grosseto, Tuscany, on charges of multiple manslaughter and dereliction of duty. The mayor of Giglio, Sergio Ortelli, stressed the islanders’ indifference to Schettino’s return.
