FLORENCE, ITALY – Fiat Chief Executive Sergio Marchionne visits Tuscan capital for a meeting of the Florentine chapter of the national industry group Confindustria.
Fiat’s plans for auto production in Italy should see all of its workers fully employed within three to four years, Marchionne said on Thursday in the evocative venue of the old Teatro del Maggio Musicale. “The most rational choice would be to close one or two plants in Italy in order to confront production overcapacity – Marchionne explained -. We have instead said that we will not close any plants in Italy. We have always managed our freedom with a conscience.”
Marchionne ironically said to the the mayor of the city, present in the audience: “Matteo Renzi driving a foreign car and his political campaign for the Italian premiership has chosen a camper foreign brand… but that’s our fault”.
