Professor Ertman will focus on the current crisis

Angela Merkel (Armin Linnartz) - CCFLORENCE, ITALY – The Euro-Crisis in Germany and Italy is the debate on October 2, 2012,at 6 pm, Villa La Pietra, Florence, Italy. In his talk, Professor Ertman will focus on the way the current European crisis has been understood and discussed in Germany.

Against this background, he will attempt to explain the behavior of the German government, and especially that of Chancellor Merkel, while also seeking to account for the reaction of Italy and other southern European crisis states to Germany´s new position within Europe.

Thomas Ertman is Associate Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Sociology at NYU. He is the former director of NYU Berlin and still leads the CAS Summer Program there as well as the Berlin Presidential Scholars group. He is the author of “Birth of the Leviathan: Building States and Regimes in Medieval and Early Modern Europe” and co-editor of “Opera and Society from Monteverdi to Bourdieu”. He has also written widely on 19th and 20th century European politics, with a special focus on Germany.
