Fight breaks out in Florence’s Piazza Duomo on New Year’s Eve

A fight involving several people broke out late on New Year’s Eve in Piazza del Duomo, Florence, according to videos circulating on social media. The incident took place during the night of 31 December to 1 January, while the historic centre was crowded with people celebrating the start of the new year.

In the short clips, a small group can be seen hitting each other in the middle of the square, at times using chairs and small tables taken from a nearby bar. Passers-by are visible close to the scene, but the confrontation appears to involve only a limited number of people and lasts a short time.

Italian police have confirmed that checks are under way to reconstruct what happened and to identify those involved. At this stage, authorities have not released information on injuries, arrests or formal complaints.

Piazza del Duomo is one of the most closely monitored areas of Florence, especially during major events and public celebrations. On New Year’s Eve, thousands of people gathered across the historic centre for concerts and street celebrations.

The videos are expected to be included in the investigation as police assess the circumstances and whether further action is required.
