As Florence prepares to welcome 2026 with free events in several central squares, the city has confirmed a package of measures aimed at easing mobility on the night of 31 December. These include continuous operation of the tramway, extended bus services, special night shuttles and discounted parking rates.
ZTL: continuous restrictions until the morning of 1 January
The Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL) will be active without interruption from 7.30 a.m. on Wednesday 31 December until 8.00 a.m. on Thursday 1 January.
Unlike previous years, there will be no temporary suspension of the ZTL during the evening.
The usual daytime rules apply in sectors A, B and O, with telematic gates switched on.
Residents will be allowed to circulate with a second vehicle if the licence plate is already listed on their paper permit. Vehicles authorised for the night-time ZTL scheme may also enter.
Public transport: buses reinforced, tramway running all night
Tramway (T1 and T2)
Florence’s tramway network will operate non-stop throughout the night on both lines:
- T1 (Villa Costanza – Careggi)
- T2 (Peretola Airport – San Marco)
Trams will run every 10 minutes on both lines. This year, following the activation of the VACS section, the T2 line terminates at Piazza San Marco.
Bus services
The public bus network managed by Autolinee Toscane will also be reinforced.
- City centre circular lines C1, C2, C3 and C4 will operate until 10.00 p.m., as part of the extended winter timetable in force until 6 January.
- On New Year’s Eve night, lines 6, 11, 14, 17 and 23 will run approximately every 30 minutes from 8.30 p.m. to 2.30 a.m.
- A free night shuttle will connect the Oltrarno area with Piazzale Michelangelo, with departures about every 15 minutes during the same time window.
Last departures (approximate times):
- Line 6: 2.10 a.m. (from Novelli), 1.44 a.m. (from Stazione Nazionale)
- Line 11: 2.00 a.m. (from Stazione Orti Oricellari), 1.55 a.m. (from La Gora)
- Line 14: 1.40 a.m. (from Stazione Nazionale), 2.10 a.m. (from Il Girone)
- Line 17: 1.12 a.m. (from Boito), 1.45 a.m. (from Verga Tozzi)
- Line 23: 1.50 a.m. (from Sorgane and from Piazza Mattei
- Night shuttle NC: 1.45 a.m. (from PO Palagi), 2.02 a.m. (from Pitti)
Passengers are reminded that a valid ticket is required on both buses and trams, purchasable via apps, contactless payment on board, vending machines or SMS.
Parking: park-and-ride and discounted city garages
To encourage the use of public transport, Florence will keep several park-and-ride car parks open overnight, directly connected to the tramway network:
- Villa Costanza (T1 terminus)
- Ponte a Greve (T1 Nenni stop)
- Guidoni (T2 stop)
In addition, city-centre garages managed by Firenze Parcheggi will offer discounted evening rates:
€1 per hour from 6.00 p.m. to midnight, provided payment is made using the BMOVE app.
The reduced rate applies at Santa Maria Novella, Parterre, Sant’Ambrogio, Oltrarno, Porta a Prato, Binario 16 SMN, Fortezza, Beccaria and San Lorenzo car parks.
Advice for the night
With large crowds expected around Piazza Santa Croce, Piazza della Signoria, Piazza Santissima Annunziata and Piazza del Carmine, the city recommends:
- using public transport rather than private cars,
- parking at tram-connected facilities on the outskirts,
- allowing extra time for travel late in the evening.
Further updates and detailed timetables are available on the official websites of Autolinee Toscane and the Florence tramway operator.
