A masterpiece by Giovanni Boldini, one of the most celebrated portraitists of the Belle Époque, is once again on view in Florence. From November 4, 2025, to January 3, 2026, the Signora con abito nero seduta di fronte (Lady in Black Dress Seated in Front, c. 1890) will be displayed at the Roberto Casamonti Collection in Palazzo Bartolini Salimbeni, Piazza Santa Trinita.
The exhibition is part of the initiative The Return of the 20th Century Masters of Art, which reintroduces important works from the first section of the collection — “From the early 20th century to the 1960s.” These paintings, carefully selected from storage, now enter into dialogue with the contemporary pieces from the second section, “From the 1960s to the early 21st century.”

With his vibrant and rapid pastel strokes, Boldini captured the elegance and allure of upper-class women at the turn of the century, becoming the most sought-after portrait painter of his time. The Lady in Black Dress embodies this refined grace, blending movement, light, and emotion.
Opened to the public in 2018, the Roberto Casamonti Collection occupies the noble floor of Palazzo Bartolini Salimbeni, a Renaissance gem designed by Baccio d’Agnolo. The collection spans the 20th and 21st centuries, featuring Italian and international artists such as Boetti, Schifano, Miró, Basquiat, Warhol, and Christo — a testament to the passion for art shared by the gallerist Roberto Casamonti and his family.
