Florence Tops Italy for Tourist Tax, Nearly €77 Million Collected

Florence has emerged as Italy’s leading city for tourist tax revenues, collecting almost €77 million in 2024. According to a report by the Centro Studi Enti Locali, based on data from the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Bank of Italy and Istat, the Tuscan capital reached €76.9 million last year, up 10% compared to 2023.

The figure highlights the scale of Florence’s tourism economy. In just two years, revenues from the levy on overnight stays have surged from €45.5 million in 2022 to today’s record, underscoring the city’s position as one of the world’s most visited cultural destinations.

Florence ranks ahead of Milan, which collected €76.5 million in 2024 after a sharp 23% increase, and Venice, which closed the year at just under €40 million with slower growth of 4%.

The national total of tourist tax revenues reached €760 million in 2024, a 19% rise compared to the previous year. The figure excludes Rome, which uses a different accounting system.

Across Italy, not all municipalities impose the tax. Out of more than 5,700 local authorities entitled to apply it, only 1,382 had done so in 2024—just under a quarter. Northern Italy accounted for nearly 60% of the total revenue, although southern regions and the islands are catching up, showing a 29% rise.

For Florence, the growth of the tourist tax reflects both record visitor numbers and the city’s ability to channel resources back into local services. The levy, often mistakenly called a “tourist fee,” is collected directly by accommodation providers and transferred to the municipality.

With Florence once again at the top of the national ranking, the tourist tax remains a crucial tool for supporting public services in a city that continues to welcome millions of visitors every year. However, opposition parties have repeatedly argued that these revenues are not truly allocated to the needs of Florentines and tourists.
