A magnitude 3.0 earthquake struck at 2:15 p.m. today in the Mugello area of northern Tuscany, according to the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV). The epicenter was located near Palazzuolo sul Senio, a small town in the Apennine Mountains close to the border with Emilia-Romagna, about 60 km northeast of Florence. The tremor originated at a depth of 9 km and was felt by residents in the area.
The Civil Protection Room of the Metropolitan City of Florence reported that the quake was part of a seismic sequence: ten events in total have been recorded since the morning, including a couple near Marradi, another town in the Mugello area. Three other quakes of smaller magnitude occurred in the hours before the 3.0 event.
Initial checks carried out by emergency operations rooms found no damage to people or property. Authorities continue to monitor the situation.
