Florence to Be Italy’s Hottest City on Sunday as Heat Alert Rises

The heatwave gripping Italy is set to intensify over the weekend, with Florence expected to be the country’s hottest city on Sunday.

According to the Ministry of Health’s heatwave bulletin, the Tuscan capital will move from an orange alert today to a red alert on Sunday August 10, 2025 — the highest warning level, signalling health risks for the entire population.

Weather forecasts indicate that temperatures will hover around 40°C in Florence and much of Tuscany at least until Ferragosto, prolonging the risk of heat-related health issues well beyond the weekend.

A red alert means that not only vulnerable groups such as the elderly, young children, and those with pre-existing health conditions are at risk, but that the entire population should take precautions.

The Ministry of Health recommends ten simple measures to cope with extreme heat: limit exposure to high temperatures, keep the body cool and hydrated, and pay special attention to those most at risk.

On Sunday, Florence will be the only Italian city on red alert. Thirteen others will be under an orange alert, which indicates health risks mainly for more fragile individuals.

10 Tips to Stay Safe During the Heatwave

  1. Avoid the sun during peak hours: Stay indoors or in shaded areas between 11:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., when temperatures are at their highest.
  2. Keep indoor environments cool: Use blinds or shutters on south- and southwest-facing windows. Air conditioning can help but should be set between 25–27°C with low humidity to avoid sudden thermal shock. Avoid directing fans or AC vents directly onto the body, especially for the elderly or bedridden.
  3. Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you’re not thirsty. Fresh fruit is also a good source of hydration. People with medical conditions or those on specific medications should consult a doctor before increasing fluid intake.
  4. Limit caffeine and avoid alcohol, which can worsen dehydration.
  5. Eat light: Prefer small, cool meals. Heavy digestion increases body heat.
  6. Dress appropriately: Wear light, loose-fitting clothes made of cotton or linen. Outdoors, use light-colored hats and UV-protective sunglasses. Children should be dressed with special care.
  7. Travel safely: Before driving, ventilate your car, especially if parked in the sun. Set the car’s internal temperature no more than 5°C below the outside. Keep water in the car and never leave children, pets, or vulnerable persons inside unattended.
  8. Avoid physical activity during the hottest hours: If exercising, stay hydrated and gradually adapt to the heat. Take frequent breaks in cool areas and consider electrolyte supplements if necessary.
  9. Check on at-risk individuals: Offer help to elderly neighbors, infants, and those with mobility issues. Reduced ability to carry out basic activities may signal health decline in older adults. Monitor children’s body temperature and use lukewarm baths to cool them down.
  10. Protect pets: Provide fresh water and ensure they stay in shaded areas.
