The upcoming weekend in Florence and Tuscany may bring another round of intense rainfall, similar to what the region experienced last Friday. According to meteorologists, there is a high likelihood of heavy and persistent rainfall, though precise forecasts will be more reliable in the coming days.
Climate Concerns and Rainfall Trends
Recent meteorological data reveals that in just three days, Florence received nearly three times the average precipitation for the entire month of March, while Vaglia saw more than four times the typical amount. From January 1 to March 15, Florence received rainfall equivalent to half of an entire year’s precipitation, leading to oversaturated soil and swelling watercourses.
Meteorologists emphasize that climate change has led to alternating periods of drought and excessive rainfall. In 2025, Tuscany is currently experiencing the latter. They warn that additional rain will exacerbate the already saturated ground conditions, increasing the risk of flooding as excess water flows directly into the sea. However, thanks to the preventive measures taken by municipalities, civil protection agencies, and infrastructure developments such as flood expansion basins, the recent flood event in Pisa was less severe than it could have been.
A precautionary approach
In light of the increasing frequency of extreme weather events, meteorologists advocate for a precautionary approach. They highlight the importance of temporary school closures during severe weather, citing the case of Sesto Fiorentino, where such measures may have prevented dangerous situations.
Citizens are also urged to take responsibility by adhering to weather warnings, avoiding basements during floods, refraining from unnecessary vehicle movements, and seeking higher ground when necessary.
Uncertain Forecasts and National Emergency Considerations
While the national government has put on hold a request for an official emergency declaration, further assessments will be conducted based on upcoming weather conditions. Officials from the National Civil Protection Department stated that additional storms are expected within the next few days. Authorities prefer to wait for the complete impact of these weather events before finalizing damage evaluations and intervention plans.
As for the weekend weather outlook, meteorologists note that the expected storm system is driven by a depression over Spain, which is pulling in moisture-laden air. The most intense rainfall is anticipated between Sunday night and Monday. However, it remains uncertain whether the heaviest downpours will affect Liguria, northern Tuscany, Florence, or the Upper Mugello region. More precise predictions are expected by Wednesday or Thursday.
The Importance of Preparedness
The recent extreme weather events serve as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and proactive measures. Citizens are encouraged to remain vigilant, follow official alerts, and take appropriate precautions to ensure safety during periods of severe weather.
