Florence Tramway Expansion: New T2 Route Opens January 25

On January 25, 2025, the city of Florence will inaugurate a new section of the tramway connecting Peretola and the Florence Airport to Piazza San Marco. This extension adds six new stops to Line T2, stretching its route by approximately 5 kilometers round-trip. The complete journey from Peretola to Piazza San Marco will now take about 35 minutes.

The operator, Gest, will run around 800 trips daily on T2, operating from 5:00 AM to 12:30 AM. On Fridays and Saturdays, service will be extended until 2:00 AM. During peak hours, trams will run every 4.5 minutes.

Work Begins on Line T3.2.1

Coinciding with the T2 extension, construction of the new Line T3.2.1, which will connect Piazza Libertà to Bagno a Ripoli, is set to begin. Preliminary work is already underway, including modifications to Piazza Cardinale Elia Dalla Costa to reorganize traffic flow. The changes include new signage and a revised one-way system, with adjustments to the lanes on both the Arno-side and Viale Europa-side of the square.

Additionally, traction tests on trees along Viale Giovine Italia are ongoing until January 17, with parking restrictions in place between Via Duca degli Abruzzi and Lungarno Pecori Giraldi near the Baldissera Barracks.

Details of the New T2 Route

The T2 extension begins at the Viale Strozzi junction with Line T1, traveling along Viale Lavagnini and circling Piazza della Libertà. The route then splits: the inbound track runs down Via Cavour to Piazza San Marco, while the outbound track follows Via La Pira and Via La Marmora back to Viale Matteotti, where the double-track layout resumes. This 2.5-kilometer section includes six stops, further enhancing Florence’s tramway network.

New Tram Line Free for 14 Days

To celebrate the launch of the new Vacs tram line on January 25th at 2:30 PM, Mayor Sara Funaro has announced a two-week free ride period for all citizens. This initiative aims to encourage everyone to explore the city through this new mode of transportation and experience the convenience it offers.
