San Casciano dei Bagni Wins “Best Tourism Village” Award from UN Tourism

San Casciano dei Bagni, a picturesque Tuscan village in the province of Siena, has been awarded the prestigious title of “Best Tourism Village” by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). The accolade celebrates villages worldwide where tourism safeguards local culture and traditions, promotes biodiversity, and provides sustainable development opportunities.

A Jewel of Southern Tuscany

Nestled at the intersection of Tuscany, Umbria, and Lazio, San Casciano dei Bagni is famed for its thermal springs, which flow at 40°C from numerous sources across its scenic landscape. Recently, the village gained international attention for the extraordinary discovery of an ancient thermal sanctuary. The site yielded over 20 bronze statues, 10,000 coins, and anatomical votive offerings from Etruscan and Roman times—artifacts of immense historical significance.

Alongside its cultural treasures, San Casciano offers a gastronomic experience that includes pici pasta and local wines, making it a must-visit destination for food enthusiasts.

A Source of Pride for Italy

The award coincides with Italy hosting the first-ever G7 Tourism Ministerial, reinforcing the nation’s position as a global leader in sustainable and culturally rich tourism. Italian Tourism Minister Daniela Santanchè lauded the achievement, stating, “San Casciano dei Bagni receiving the ‘Best Tourism Village’ recognition is a testament to the charm and authenticity of Italy’s smaller gems. These villages showcase the excellence of our craftsmanship, gastronomy, traditions, and culture, representing the heart of our national heritage.”

A Vision of Sustainable Tourism

Agnese Carletti, the mayor of San Casciano dei Bagni, expressed her gratitude for the recognition, emphasizing the village’s commitment to sustainable and respectful tourism. “This award celebrates our community’s dedication to preserving our history, traditions, and environment,” she said. The recent discovery of the Bronzi di San Casciano has inspired the community to develop a unique tourism experience that highlights local culture and natural beauty while fostering economic growth.

The mayor also thanked the Tuscany Region, the Valdichiana Wine and Food Route, and local institutions for their role in preparing the village’s candidacy. “This is a team effort,” she added, “and we are committed to continuing on this path of growth and innovation.”

A Warm Invitation to Visitors

San Casciano dei Bagni’s achievement shines a spotlight on the hidden treasures of Tuscany, offering a glimpse into a world where history, culture, and nature intertwine. Visitors are invited to explore this enchanting village and discover its rich heritage, making it a true “Best Tourism Village” in every sense.
