FLORENCE, ITALY – On June 14 in Athens, for the Megaron Gala, maestro Zubin Mehta with the Orchestra del Maggio and violinist Pinchas Zukerman was in a concert at the Acropolis at the Odeon Herodes Atticus theater.
The Brahmsian program included the concert in D minor Op. 77 for violin and orchestra and the Symphony n 2 in D major Op. 73, two compositions just performed at the Maggio on the occasion of the first two concerts of the Brahms Cycle.
The Maggio continues its intense programming activity, also contemplating the international scene and in this case being practically still the only Italian musical institution to cross the borders of the country; the trip to Athens precedes those scheduled in mid-August to celebrate the fifteenth of the foundation of the Grafenegg Festival in Austria on August 14, and then on August 15 in Budapest where two concerts with the Orchestra are scheduled, again with the direction of maestro Zubin Mehta del Maggio and the soloist Rudolf Buchbinder in a program with compositions by Ludwig van Beethoven and Johannes Brahms.
The evening’s program in Athens opened with the Concert in D major for violin and orchestra Op. 77 and concluded with the Symphony n. 2 in D major composed with surprising speed when compared to the very long gestation, which lasted almost twenty years, which accompanied his first symphonic composition.
If the First had been hailed as the tenth symphony, alluding to the Beethoven heritage of which Brahms is the guardian and guarantor, the Second was called pastoral for its predominantly lyrical and melodic character, but also Viennese for the use of the waltz rhythm in two of the four movements.
