FLORENCE, ITALY – Experts said Friday they believed they had uncovered a scale model of the famous masonry dome of Florence’s S. Maria del Fiore designed by Filippo Brunelleschi during excavations to expand the cathedral museum.
The dig brought to light an area that may have served as a workshop for the construction of the dome, containing a model measuring three metres in circumference and made of bricks arranged in a herringbone pattern, just like the 15th-century dome itself. The discovery was presented during an official site visit to the Duomo museum. (Ansa)
